New horse shopping?
Oh boy! The excitement of thinking about a new horse! Smiles abound and the excitement of finding the “right one” keeps you up at night! You start the search process….. And are adding up the details of your perfect horse such as breed, gender, age, color, height, training and of course your budget. After a quick search of Facebook, Dream Horse, Warmblood Sale, Equine Now and every other site you come across you are find nothing and the tears start to flow! They either over your budge, lame, across the country, aren’t at the level they are advertised, wrong color, wrong sex, too taller or too short. This searching is as difficult as making an FEI mount! Okay, take a breath and let’s discuss how things could look differently.
Everyone is looking for that perfect unicorn but in reality those unicorns can come in many different shapes and forms. Don’t be afraid to expand your options and keep an open mind to something younger, different breed or talented but at a lower level. For example maybe you fall upon a youngster with a great mind and nice gaits, and there could be a schoolmaster for lease at your barn that is available to ride while the young horse is in training. You could be sharpening your riding skills in expectation of the youngster being trained and ready for you. Another option could be you have your dreams set on that outstanding warmblood but an average moving horse comes available close to you and she has a steady mind with a great work ethic, and you move up the levels quickly. Or an older well schooled individual comes available and he isn’t that hunk of your dreams but his personality and level headiness makes dreams come true that you didn’t even know were possible. Lastly don’t forget to look at those mares, they can get a bad name but they are 50% of the equine population and are amazing!
